Crowns & Bridges

Crowns and bridges are not exactly recent innovations in dentistry. In fact, both of these types of restorations have been around for generations. And there’s good reason for that – they are both excellent methods for replacing one or more missing teeth! Dr. Loveless would like to remind his Austin, TX, area patients that it’s important to replace missing teeth as soon as possible. The fact is that even one missing tooth can throw off your bite, and that can have negative long-term consequences for your oral health.

All About Crowns

Actual Patient

Crown (also known as “caps”) are restorations that are intended to cover the whole surface of a tooth. Modern-day crowns are often made of porcelain, a material that is not only extremely durable but also one that can be made to very closely match the color of your natural teeth. That means that a porcelain crown is barely noticeable to other people. But crowns can also be made of metal. While porcelain is extremely strong, metal is even stronger, which makes it a good choice for molars in the back of the mouth that do the majority of chewing. A crown can be used to save a badly damaged tooth that can’t be repaired with a filling. Crowns are also used with dental implants, and as replacement teeth in bridges.

All About Bridges

A dental bridge is an appliance that is made up of one or more crowns mounted onto a metal frame. The frame includes brackets on either end which are attached to existing natural teeth. Bridges can be used to replace a single tooth or more than that if the patient is missing several teeth in a row. Although bridges can be either removable or “fixed” (in other words, not removable), many dental patients choose fixed bridges because they can be cared for in the same way as the patient’s natural teeth. Another advantage of a fixed bridge is that is doesn’t move inside the patient’s mouth, and that makes it possible for the patient to enjoy whatever foods they like.
